Subject: The University of Manchester Update

Dear colleagues

We hope you are staying safe and well, and thank you for your continued support as we navigate these challenging times.

We are heartened to see the first announcements regarding the re-opening of visa processing centres in some cities, and the resumption of ATAS processing, and now look forward to beginning to issue our CASs from June. We would appreciate updates from you on how visa appointments and processing are proceeding as more VACs start to open.

In this Update we are happy to share links to some virtual sessions for you and prospective students to attend, including the University’s Virtual Online Week (15-19 June) which will showcase undergraduate study options at Manchester. Virtual postgraduate events will follow later in June, and we will share plans with you when the schedule is finalised.

Start of Year arrangements

We are busily planning for the new academic term, and working on our enhanced welcome and arrival package for the 2020 cohort. We are keenly aware that many of our offer holders want further details as soon as possible, to inform theirchoices and plans for the coming year. Further messages for offer holders will follow in the week of 8th June.

It appears that some students may have misunderstood our initial announcement about moving large group lectures online, as meaning that all our teaching will be online. Actually, our taught programmes of study include not just large group lectures but also a variety of smaller group teaching such as seminars, laboratory classes and academic tutorials. We are currently planning to teach these smallergroup elements face to face, (following national safety guidelines on campus as appropriate) and to ensure that students will have every opportunity to engage fully with academics and other students. We are committed to enriching both online and campus basedlearning resources, and to providing the maximum flexibility for students whose physical arrival in Manchester may be delayed.

We are aware that given the disruptions associated with coronavirus, students will continue to have many questions about what to expect at Manchester. We are working on a series of short videos with academic staff to explain and illustratethe mix of online, face-to-face and independent study elements of learning across our taught programmes.

We will continue to update our FAQs page for prospective students here.

As always, we welcome suggestions and feedback from you on how we may better address any students’ concerns.

Extension to SELT/non-SELT validity

In response to ongoing global disruption to English language testing, The University of Manchester will provide a limited extension to the validity of approved SELT and non-SELT tests, including IELTS. Tests with an expiry date from 1stSeptember 2020 to 31 January 2021 will be accepted for CAS issue for course entry between September 2020 and January 2021 only. Please note, this concession will not apply to test certificates used for Pre-Sessional courses or Foundation year-only CAS.

Lockdown Lecture Series

Over the next few weeks, some of our researchers will be going online to tell their stories. We hope that both your colleagues and your students will enjoy seeing some of Manchester’s academic experts in action! Please find further informationhere about the Lockdown Lecture Series. From physicist Brian Cox to historians David Olusoga and Michael Wood, our celebrated experts will be going online to tell you about what inspired them to help change the world.

Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health Webinars

Academic colleagues from our Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health will be delivering a series of webinars including topical subjects such as “Bugs and Drugs” and “The Future of Genetic Modification”. Please see the attached schedulefor more information regarding the talks and how to register.

Undergraduate Virtual Open Week

As an alternative to our on-campus open day events, we are running an undergraduate virtual open week with popular open day talks and subject information sessions, from Monday, 15 to Friday, 19 June 2020. For more information and registrationdetails, please visit the dedicated page here
