Date: 2020-04-02 03:58 Subject: Update from the University of Birmingham: Pre-sessional English Policy Update Dear Jill and Wendy,

Greetings from the University of Birmingham. I hope this email finds you and the team at Golden Arrow are staying safe and well!

Following on our last update, we have made further changes to our Pre-sessional English courses for students wishing to join us in 2020.

Online delivery of courses: In light of the current global situation with COVID-19, the following pre-sessional programmes will be primarily delivered online:

20 week: 11 May - 18 September 2020 (latest start date: 18 May) 15 week: 01 June - 18 September 2020 (latest start date: 8 June) 10 week: 22 June - 28 August 2020 (latest start date: 29 June) 6 week: 13 July - 21 August 2020 (latest start date: 20 July)

PLEASE NOTE: · The 20 week programme begins two weeks later than originally advertised but finishes at the same time in order for students to be able to apply for their CAS and take up their place at Birmingham in September. Please be assured that the same depth of content will be covered over this timeframe. · For courses delivered wholly online, students will not be required to hold a CAS and alternative English language qualifications (see section below) can be considered. Format of the online Pre-sessional English course: Students can be assured that all programmes will be run to the same high standard as our campus-based programmes. The courses are produced by our own academic staff at the University and are delivered using our own virtual learning environment as well as by video conference using Zoom.

· They will include a mixture of interactive, class-based discussion and listening tasks set by dedicated class tutor, as well as guided reading and written tasks with feedback to develop skills. · Students will be fully supported throughout the course and will receive regular 1-1 tutorials by video. · Students will be assessed using a mixture of coursework and online tests. · Timetabled sessions will take into account the needs of students studying in different time zones. Campus based courses: Currently, we still hope to run two campus-based pre-sessional English programmes this year as below: 10 week: 13 July -18 September 2020 (latest start date: 20 July) 6 week: 10 August – 18 September 2020 (latest start date: 17 August)

PLEASE NOTE: As at this stage we cannot guarantee that on campus teaching will take place so we recommend students to enrol on our online pre-sessional programmes. We will send students further details on how to transfer to campus-based programmes as and when these are confirmed.

Alternative English Language qualifications: For students joining us for 2020, we will also accept the following tests as evidence of English language proficiency and the detailed entry requirements for each course length will be published soon.

· TOEFL “At Home” Test · Duolingo English Test · The Chinese College English Test (CET-6) (please note that this will be accepted in conjunction with a BIA Speaking test and must be accompanied by at least a 6-week Pre-sessional English programme) PLEASE NOTE: The University is working on the validation of alternative English language qualifications and more details will be updated shortly with you once confirmed.

Further information: We keep updating our Pre-sessional English courses information and the FAQ for PSE page as more details are confirmed very soon. I will also keep you posted of any policy updates for 2020 intake.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any feedback and questions. The ongoing support from you and the Golden Arrow team is greatly appreciated. Please be reassured that we will do everything we can to minimise the impact of the situation and keep working closely with you through the challenging time.

With best wishes,
