The New Zealand Government has placed the country in full lockdown for at least the next four weeks as part of an unparalleled public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This means that our students, staff and all members of the public must remain in their homes. I am writing to provide you with some updates regarding the University’s response to this situation.

ALL COURSES AVAILABLE ONLINE: Starting today, Monday 30 March, all “papers” (courses) at the University of Otago, are being delivered online. Students have received information from their academic coordinators or lecturers via the University’s “Blackboard” student portal and via email during the weekend. The specific details regarding all academic matters (e.g. lectures, tutorials, assignments and examinations) for each paper will be communicated directly to students directly by each academic coordinator/lecturers. Although not all details are confirmed at this stage (e.g. how examinations will be conducted for students studying online), our academics will work with the students directly to keep them updated as those decisions are confirmed.

For now, all of our students, wherever they are located, should be able to continue their learning. If they experience any technical difficulties, students should contact our Ask Otago service

PASTORAL CARE AND SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS DURING LOCKDOWN: The University of Otago is committed to ensuring appropriate pastoral care is available to all of our students, alongside academic support, wherever they continue their learning with us. While some students have returned to their home country following requests from partner institutes or their government, there are still many international and domestic students who remain at our University campus locations. Our residential colleges remain open and dedicated college staff remain on hand to support students living in this type of accommodation. Our University-owned flats “UniFlats” also remain open and available to our exchange and Study Abroad students remaining in New Zealand, along with the support team that manages this accommodation.

We also have many students living in private flats or houses that are not owned by the University. In order to ensure we are aware of where students are and to be able to offer appropriate support, we have requested all students not living in University-owned colleges or UniFlats, to please register with our Ask Otago service so that they can receive a daily wellness check and be in touch with the University during the lockdown period. Students have received this information through their Otago student email and also via Blackboard, the student portal.

International students are also invited to connect with our International Student Support team on a daily basis, as part of an “International Café”. This is a welcoming and relaxed virtual meet up, via Zoom, to bring students together with pastoral care staff during the lockdown period. It is also an opportunity for students who have returned to their home country but will be continuing studies online to connect with the University of Otago and fellow students. The International Café Zoom is held daily and this information has been communicated directly to students via the Blackboard student portal. Students who prefer to meet (virtually) one-on-one with an International Student Advisor can email the International Student Support team at international.support@otago.ac.nz.

想要和国际学生导师一对一交流的学生可以发邮件给国际学生支持团队,地址是international.support@otago.ac.nz。

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we have been working through the shift to online delivery of all papers and shifting the International Office teams and support service to working from home. We will continue to update you as and when key developments take place.
