Greetings from Cardiff University!

We are writing to inform you of some significant changes to the Pre-sessional Programmes at Cardiff University.

All pre-sessional courses are being delivered online Due to the ongoing challenges we are all facing as a result of COVID-19, our 12, 10 and 8-week Pre-sessional Programmes for 2020 will be delivered fully online.

This means that your students will be able to study their Pre-sessional Programme from home and will not need to travel to Cardiff for the course.

As this is a new way of us delivering our pre-sessional teaching, we are working to ensure that we continue to offer the quality of experience you would expect from a Cardiff University course.

The online course will: develop language and skills to prepare students for their academic course at Cardiff University include a full programme of course materials, audio and video input, and self-access materials which will cover the skills of academic reading, writing, listening and speaking offer every student a classroom experience from the safety of their own homes: they will be placed in a group of students for online lessons with one of our experienced and qualified Tutors, as well as being guided to self-study tasks to supplement their online learning. provide weekly tutorials and individual feedback on progress offer all students pastoral care from our approachable and caring team orientate students into academic life and provide professional guidance on academic issues and expectations. Students already holding offers for a Pre-sessional Programme will not need to opt-into the online course, their application will be automatically updated.

Applications are still open for students wanting to undertake our Pre-sessional Programmes. Please apply online in the normal way.

Change of date for 12-week pre-sessional

The 12-week Pre-sessional Programme will now start on Monday 22 June and finish on 11 September 2020.

This is to help give students additional time at the end of the pre-sessional course to apply for their visa for their academic course in September.

The 10 and 8-week pre-sessional start dates have not changed.

If a student’s plans change

We understand that with these changes, and during this difficult time, students may wish to change their study plans. If they no longer want to study on a Pre-sessional Programme please let us know by emailing elt@cardiff.ac.uk.

If your students no longer wish to study on a Pre-sessional Programme, the following options are available:

  1. Move directly into academic study If a student’s English language level has improved since they applied for a Pre-sessional Programme, they could cancel their pre-sessional place and take a test to try to meet the language conditions of their academic offer. Details of suitable language tests can be found on our website.

  2. Defer academic offer to 2021 If your students would like to postpone their academic study, you can contact the International Office and ask about deferring their academic offer. Students can also re-apply for a Pre-sessional Programme in 2021 – but please note that we are unable to defer pre-sessional offers.

Residences and fees

Residences Students who have already paid for University accommodation for their Pre-sessional Programme will automatically receive a refund of their accommodation fees.

Please note that the Residences Team are extremely busy at the moment so this could take up to 6 weeks.

Pre-sessional course fees The course fees for the 12, 10 and 8-week Pre-sessional Programmes have not changed.

We are here to support you

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that these changes cause but hope that offering our Pre-sessional Programmes by online delivery will offer additional opportunities and options for your students at this difficult time.

Please let us know if you have any questions.
