COVID-19 Update for Summer 2020 Students Dear Partner,

As you may be aware, on Friday, March 20th, the Canadian Government announced that they will be allowing exemptions to the travel ban for international students to travel to Canada. As the exemption has not yet officially come into effect, we are continuing to monitor Canadian Government updates.

We understand, along with yourselves, your students have many questions and concerns regarding our Summer intake and we have prepared the below guidance to assist with your students’ individual cases.

Q. My student has a study permit approval/valid study permit issued on or prior to March 18th, 2020, but has not yet arrived in Canada. Will my student be able to start classes in Summer 2020?

The Summer semester is still scheduled to start on May 4th, although at this time the College is preparing to offer the majority of courses online. If the situation changes and we are able to return to in-person instruction, students will be notified by instructors and information will be posted on the College website. Some programs may not have the ability to start online, so if your individual program is impacted we will be contacting you to defer your student to Fall 2020.

Based on the government’s recent exemption, students who held a valid study permit, or had been approved for a study permit, when the travel restrictions took effect on March 18, 2020, will be permitted to travel to Canada. However, in addition to health screening protocols, a mandatory 14 day self-isolation will be in effect which must take place prior to classes starting online on Monday, May 4th.

Douglas College will accommodate students who are able/willing to travel to Canada, can abide by the 14 day mandatory self-isolation period, and who wish to take courses online. It is important that students are aware that in-person College resources and campus services may be reduced.

Douglas College wants to ensure the success of our new students arriving in Canada and will be reviewing individual requests to start classes as planned. For students able to start classes on time, we will be providing online resources to best prepare you for your life in Canada and as a first semester Douglas College student.

Given the above information, if your student would still like to start classes in Summer, you (or your student) must submit in writing a request to DCIAdmissions@douglascollege.ca, or Admissions Officer, by Wednesday, April 8th. In your request, please include the following information: Proof of flight to Canada scheduled no later than Friday, April 17th. Proof of study permit approval or a valid study permit with an issue date of March 18th, 2020 or earlier. Proof of homestay or other accommodation (hotel booking, Airbnb, etc.) confirming a start date of no later than Saturday, April 18th. If your student is staying in private (e.g. family) accommodation, please include a letter from their host confirming their accommodation arrangement.

If we do not receive a written request by Wednesday, April 8th, we will automatically defer the student’s enrolment to the Fall 2020 intake.

Q. My student does not have a study permit approval/valid study permit issued on or prior to March 18th, 2020, and has not yet arrived in Canada. Will my student be able to start classes in Summer 2020?

Students who do not have a valid study permit or study permit approval issued on or prior to March 18th, 2020, will not be permitted to travel to Canada. Additionally, IRCC has not confirmed if online study outside of Canada will impact PGWP eligibility. As such, students will not be able to start classes in Summer 2020 and have the option to either defer or cancel their enrolment. We are providing flexibility with our refund policy and will be issuing a 100% refund for these cases. Deferral and refund requests must be received by Monday, April 27th. Please contact DCIAdmissions@douglascollege.ca, your agent, or Admissions Officer for further information on our deferral/cancellation process.

Q. My student has already arrived in Canada. Will my student be able to start classes in Summer 2020? The Summer semester is still scheduled to start on May 4th, although at this time the College is preparing to offer courses online. If the situation changes and we are able to return to in-person instruction, students will be notified by instructors and information will be posted on the College website. Students currently located inside of Canada will be able to take courses delivered online without impacting PGWP eligibility. Some programs may not have the ability to start online, so if your student’s individual program is impacted we will be contacting you to defer your student to Fall 2020.

Douglas College will accommodate students who wish to take courses online. It is important that students are aware that in-person College resources and campus services may be reduced. Please see below for information regarding our deferral and refund procedure if your student no longer wish to start classes in Summer 2020.

If your student would still like to start classes in Summer, you must submit in writing a request to DCIAdmissions@douglascollege.ca or to your Admissions Officer by Monday, April 27th along with proof of your student’s study permit approval or valid study permit.

If we do not receive a written request by Monday, April 27th, we will automatically defer your student to the Fall 2020 intake.

Q. Can students defer their acceptance to Fall 2020 or cancel their enrolment entirely?

Yes. Given the lack of current certainty regarding COVID-19 situation, we understand if students and their families wish to defer their enrolment to Fall 2020. Students who no longer wish to study in Canada for Summer or Fall 2020 may request a refund. We are providing some flexibility with our refund policy with cases related to COVID-19. Deferral and refund requests must be received by Monday, April 27th. Please contact your Admissions Officer, agent, or dciadmissions@douglascollege.ca for further information on our deferral and refund process.

As always, we will continue to update you as soon as we receive additional information.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out to us if there is anything additional we can do to help. We know that this is a very stressful and uncertain time for everyone, and we’re doing our best to get through this challenging period together! Our admissions team is working from home but are ready to assist you through this process.

Sincerely,

Douglas College International Admissions Team
