I wish to update you on some important COVID-19 related developments in New Zealand and what this means for the University of Otago.

Today the New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, has moved New Zealand to COVID-19 “Alert Level 3”, with a move to “Alert Level 4” in 48 hours. Among other things, this announcement means that our students, staff and members of the public will be required to stay at home, from Wednesday evening, in order to support an unparalleled public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The University had already begun its roll out of online delivery for the first group of papers (courses) today, as an action to support social distancing measures. The Prime Minister’s announcement means that we will now fast-track our remaining plans so that the large majority of all papers are ready to be delivered online from next week.
Due to this rapidly changing situation, we have this afternoon announced to students and staff that all teaching is suspended for the rest of this week. This will allow academics and support staff to adapt and move the other papers online, and resume teaching on Monday 30 March.

I wish to reassure you that the University will still be teaching, we are not closed. Our students, wherever they are located, should be able to continue their learning.

Some teaching may not be possible without face-to-face interaction and these papers / programmes will be reassessed by staff. We will continue to update you as quickly as possible with regards to this smaller number of affected papers.

I can also advise that there have still not been any reported cases of COVID-19 coronavirus on campus to date.

The International Office is currently shifting all staff to deliver services and support from home. Over this past weekend we tested our capacity to do this and I am confident that we will still be well placed to provide quality support to our international students and our valued partners. Obviously this may look and feel a little different than usual, and I ask that you bear with us as we undertake this transition. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through today’s announcement and the questions that may arise for you. I do hope the above information is helpful. For regular updates, please refer to information on our website: www.otago.ac.nz/coronavirus
